Quiet Enjoyment Initiative (QEI)

Did you know?

  • The word Noise is derived from the Latin, Nausea; the World Health Organization’s Guidelines for Community Noise says noise is literally making us sick.
  • Sound carries easily over water; persons responsible are often completely unaware of the obtrusiveness.

“We can HEAR you!”

  • From British Common Law, Canadians inherited the legal right to the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of one’s property.
  • Federal Law (Navigable Waters Act) states that all powerboats within 8 kms of a shoreline are required to have adequate noise abatement systems in use; outboard and inboard/outboards motors are NOT a problem as they exhaust through the water.

“We can HEAR you!”

  • Our National Parks have banned all Personal Water Craft and Snowmobiles because of their excessive noise levels and detrimental effects to the concept of quiet enjoyment of our national parks.
  • The Sylvan Lake Quiet Enjoyment Initiative (QEI) has been mandated to work toward the premise of the enjoyment of quiet on behalf of people on and around the lake, including visitors and all users, summer and winter.

“We can HEAR you!”

What can you do?

  • Observe Federal regulations requiring adequate mufflers on all motorized watercraft.
  • Ensure your boat’s noise abatement system is up to Federal standards and is operating correctly.
